The true reasons for testing a student’s knowledge, skills and understanding are often lost in the mire of mixed-up priorities.

Not unique to South Africa, but damaging nevertheless, this story illustrates not only the confusion around assessment,, but it points toward another reason why true reform in South African education will be unnecessarily delayed.

  1. I often wonder about the assessments that are given to learners. My son is in Grade 4 and his history assessment was a comprehension test… not much “history” being tested there…. it was an English test based on textual information about history… There is a GREAT DEAL of work needed but alas I doubt there will ever be a significant change!
